This shoot was self-shot and self-published, created without any outside direction. Situations like this occasionally happen within the editorial industry, and when they do, creative teams simply move forward and place the work where it will be respected and presented properly.

The images from this session later found their home with Looker Magazine, where the series was published as intended.

What matters most is that the work itself continues to live and be shared, and this shoot with Linda remains a wonderful example of what happens when preparation, collaboration, and presence all align.

I want to use this feature to explain something that is rarely explained plainly, especially to models who are early in their careers or trying to move beyond social media.

Getting published is not mysterious or hard to do. (It is also not guaranteed.)

This post is meant to clarify what actually matters.

Publicat ion Is About the Work, Not the Model’s Status

Most magazines are not selecting people.

They are selecting sets of images.

Editors look at:

Whether the images feel complete
Whether the visual story makes sense
Whether the lighting and composition are consistent
Whether the subject feels present, not performative

Editors are reviewing whether a group of photographs can function together in print. They are looking at cohesion, consistency, and usability. Follower count, popularity, and online visibility are not usually a part of the evaluation process.

If the images do not work together as a set, the submission fails, even if individual photos are strong. If the images feel unfinished, inconsistent, or chaotic, they cannot be placed in a magazine layout.

This is the baseline most models are never taught.

Today I am 38 years old.

It’s interesting to look back on a life you never expected to experience so fully.

To see the world through the lens of growth through pain,

growth through hardship,

and growth through self-awareness.

I’ve always felt that a birthday is the true new year.

It’s when I take stock of the life I’ve lived so far

and refocus on where I want to go next.

Reaching 38 feels like a quiet kind of miracle.

There were chapters where I didn’t think I’d make it this far.

Moments where survival was the only goal.

But I did it. Alone. When it would have broken most people.

My pride doesn’t come from ego.

It comes from the fact that I kept going.

I built a life from the ashes of everything that was meant to destroy me.

And somewhere in the process of surviving, I started to thrive.

I can see clearly now that I’ve gone through it.

When Needing new headshots leads to self-publication..

I think there is an emptiness that comes with an artist... a distinct feeling of being denied the same experiences others access with ease. To be surrounded by people, yet somehow, always feeling so inescapably alone. An outcast, forever looking in.

I will admit... Shifting for model to photographer has come with some new experiences I did not expect.

One being the constant competition amongst photographers in general. As a model, we usually always found ways to work together. Plus..it made the shoots more enjoyable to be on the same projects together. I had girls where we traveled to several different countries together. It was always more like a sisterhood. A reuniting when we saw each other again. No competition or animosity. That was never on the menu.

I am seeing in real time how many in my area have a need to do things I truly have not seen since high school and it has caused a bit of stress for me. This has resulted in me blocking several companies I might have otherwise liked to work with, but the unsavory behavior even through business accounts lets me know the choices that I made, were made correctly.

I have had people attempt to smear my name after I cultivated multiple publications for them, I once had a model attempt to relieve herself in public in the middle of downtown Salem, and had my name drug through the mud due to that model only telling part of the experience and not the full experience. (Seriously, Who does that?)

This seems to be normal behavior for the area and while I realize it is a bit smaller than Las Vegas or Los Angeles... I did believe there would be a modicum of professionalism within our creative sphere but i've been shown how I have to adjust.

One adjustment has been not simply shooting everyone I would like to shoot. People tend to mistake genuine kindness for weakness, especially if those of us do not look like the life we have grown through.

If I have learned anything it is that people will try you where they are and your reaction to that behavior will teach them how to treat you.

If you choose boundaries for your own peace you will find many will dislike you and even find ways to attempt and pull others into their cycle of hatred, with you as the target simply because you did not cower to their toxic and normalized ways of abusing people they work with.

As someone who has been a target her entire life.

I can promise you.

Turning down your light and dimming your soul will do nothing but break you and it will start from the inside out.

If you want to truly live a life of happiness and authentic peace, you must first choose your own truth above the expectations of others k n o w i n g that it will most likely shift the way they choose to connect to you.

It is not until you can choose your own truth, standing fully alone without anyone else to support you that you truly see who you are and what you are made of.

In life we have so many opportunities to be more than just someone who earns an income.

We can choose to create in a way that tells our truth while also inspiring others to do the same .

If nothing else, I hope my own work can show you that nobody even really cares what you do. I

f you are weird and loud and just don't add up to the status quo.. It probably means you are meant to stand tall in that.

To create something our world has never seen and to do that so honestly nothing else can compare.

To get lost in this world simply means that we are that much closer to finding out who we truly are, and that is the point of it all.

You've never seen a cuter event in your life!

Back in June, I had the wonderful privilege of volunteering as a photographer for the Oregon Humane Society's biggest fundraiser of the year—the "Doggie Dash," hosted at the beautiful Riverfront Park in downtown Salem, Oregon.

The excitement began at 9 AM with the first wave of runners hitting the track, setting a vibrant and enthusiastic tone for the rest of the day. Although I couldn't arrive until after 11 AM, the energy was palpable, with events like the Frisbee Demo, Doggie Leap Contest, and even a Doggie Musical already having delighted attendees.

Meet Benni ! He is a search and rescue pup! A real life good boy hero!

There were so many happy pups and owners at the Doggie Dash!

I must take a moment to commend the Oregon Humane Society for their impeccable organization and dedication. Setting up from as early as 4:30 AM, their commitment to animal welfare and community enjoyment was truly inspiring.

The kids corner had a ' make your own button' . Very cool to see, I haven't seen that since I was a kid myself. Really fun!

So many awesome people came together to make this event happen!

One highlight that resonated deeply with me was the Dog & Owner Look-Alike contest. Particularly memorable was a stylish duo sporting iconic matching outfits inspired by Paris—a delightful sight!

The day concluded hilariously with a "Peanut Butter Lick-Off." Imagine dog owners kneeling, holding peanut butter-filled spoons between their teeth, while their furry companions eagerly competed to lick their spoons clean first. Capturing these playful and heartwarming moments through my lens was an absolute joy.

Events like these are crucial, as proceeds directly support the Oregon Humane Society's noble mission to care for and protect animals. Several local businesses contributed significantly to the success of the Doggie Dash, and I was proud to see their commitment to supporting our furry friends:
